Long ago, in my 20s (when I had plenty of estrogen to throw around and my jawline was as fierce as my wardrobe), I used to snobbishly predict that when I was pushing 50 or 60, I would opt to age gracefully and naturally. Back then, in the 90s, the anti-aging method for New Yorkers who could afford it was plastic surgery and a facial peel down to the Dermis (painful!). Standing at my perch in the make up department at Barney's on Madison Ave, women would come to me for post op. triage, looking for make up to cover their secrets. I had to do my magic as a make up artist to cover the bruising, scarring, and worst of all, cover their raw, healing skin. I would say to myself- I will never do this! I am not the type that would ever choose this!
Guess what? 25 years later and I take that back. Now, the methods are better than ever. Dammit. Insert crow to mouth.
I can honestly say that I have hit a stage of my life where I am a little alarmed by the passage of time and more than intrigued by methods to slow it down. I understand why men and women seek out methods to stop the clock. I, myself, have had 5 facial peels (not the kind I described above, but a much more gentle approach to exfoliation and resurfacing) and have been asking very detailed questions to my Dermotologist, Dr. Elizabeth Goldberg, about why in fact Lady Gaga looks fucking amazing, but not gross or plastic? What can I do about certain areas of my face without cutting the skin? How can I gently and subtly improve my looks without coming across as over done? Or done at all? Answer? Lasers, radio frequency, and injectables. It's what all the celebrities are doing and man, I get it! Have you seen Reese Witherspoon lately? Or Jennifer Anniston?
Yes, it's all about a light hand and choosing modalities that make sense for you. Why get botox if wrinkles aren't a big deal, but jowls are? Choose the most beneficial procedure and wait and see, you know? I came back from my doctor's office with a handful of brochures and a case of sticker shock- the shit ain't cheap. But, I am not ruling it out if I get my hands on a little funny money. In the meantime, this article is a great breakdown of what is available and what's popular. I really think it's exciting and really cool- and I never thought I'd ever feel this way. Look, this is the future of anti-aging and good for us! If it makes you or me feel awesome, then why not? Seriously. Why? Not?
