FAQ

frequently asked questions about chemical peels

Why do you think I'd like a peel?
Because the results are more dramatic, stubborn skin conditions can be rectified, and it's less time on my table, allowing you to be in and out in under 45 minutes.

How much downtime is there?

It depends on the intensity of the peel. Usually it’s about 1-3 days.

Will I see immediate results?
Right after your treatment, you will notice you’re flushed and the skin looks exfoliated and smoother, but for the significant changes like overall better skin texture, increased collagen and elastin production, better moisture retention, softening of fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing pore size, the fading of age spots and hyper-pigmentation, and the softening of scars - it will take a series of peels and results can be seen after the 6 peel series is complete. And results vary, which is why a consultation is necessary.

What exactly is a peel? And will I literally peel?
A peel is a chemical exfoliation using acids, vitamins and/or enzymes. What makes the peel effective is a high percentage of acid at a low pH - this is what can cause peeling.  The more peeling you will see on your skin varies with each peel and it's pH. Our skin is from a 5.5 - 6.5 on the pH scale (it's a little acidic) so applying a peel that's around a 4 - 2.5 pH is really going to push the skin to shed.
What do the acids and enzymes do?

In technical terms, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) loosen and remove the intercellular matrix (the glue) that's holding the cells together. Once this "cement" is dissolved, the dead cells can freely shed, sometimes causing the skin to peel and revealing the newer, brighter cells underneath. Fruit enzymes work on the top layer of the epidermis and don't penetrate as deeply. Their job is to eat up dead skin on the top layer of our skin. Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), Retinol (a derivative of Vitamin A) and Vitamin C are also found in peels- they brighten the skin, protect new basal cells, and resurface as well.
Why is Fall and Winter the perfect time to start a peel series?

  • The weather is cooler. Skin reacts to heat the same way it reacts to UVA. Cooler weather is more comfortable and safer when you're doing a peel.

  • Less daylight is present. For several days post peel, you're vulnerable to UVA. It's why I don't recommend doing peels in the summer. More time in the hot sun (even with SPF) can be dangerous. Fall and Winter is perfect for deep exfoliation!

  • Most of us are on a predictable schedule so making your appointments can be stress free. We will lock you in and all you need to do is show up for 30 minutes, roughly every 2-3 weeks.

  • Food for thought: If you start now, you could be finished with your peel schedule by the holidays. If you start after the new year, you’ll be finished by Spring! Glowing, clearer skin with improved texture and smaller pores is a pick me up and and can create confidence.

Do chemical peels hurt?
During a peel, it can sting, itch and feel warm, which can cause discomfort, but once the peel is neutralized you should feel zero activity. As your skin heals, you may peel which can look like tiny, papery flakes. This can be itchy and your skin may feel tight and dry. Your at-home regimen will assist you with all of this.

What choices can I make to actually see changes in my skin?

Getting regular facials, following a skin regimen, wearing SPF every day, eating foods high in anti-oxidants (and drinking a collagen shot too!), sleeping a healthy amount of hours, and (optional) doing a 6 peel series once or twice a year are choices you can make to support your skin health! And it is never too late to start or too early to begin. Great skin, all over your body, is possible anytime. The choice is yours.
